Participatory Photography Workshop

Together with (8) Syrian girls, we have explored the art of photography through visual education, storytelling and content creation. Photography is approached as an art form and a tool for self-expression, as well as a means for empowerment and self-awareness. During the months of working side by side, photography has been the background to reflect on various themes of interest to the girls, in particular related to their educational and working opportunities in Gaziantep as young refugee women. We have worked together to create and build individual and group narratives around chosen themes, ultimately creating a comprehensive body of work that reflects the visions and intentions of all participants and myself as their mentor and guide.

Photography is known to be a tool for self expression and empowerment. We strive to give girls the opportunity and tools to develop a sense of belonging and value to personal creations, to observe their context and social relationships under new lenses, to stimulate creativity and alternative thinking.

Some girls are not enrolled in formal education or have few educational opportunities. A photography course will teach them new skills and at the same time provide them with a free and personal space to understand, shape and reimagine the context and reality in which they live.
